Possibility of a Book

Organized with: Avigail Reiner, Arieh Rosen, Ran Kasmy Ilan, Liat Lavi, Nir Harel

"Possibility of a Book” is an ongoing project examining the nature and status of Book Art through both praxis and theory. It aims at enabling the production of books, celebrating their existence, and discussing their cultural, social, and political implications. The project intends to fill a local gap while acting in a wide-ranging international sphere.

“Possibility of a Book” was founded in 2010 by cultural practitioners in the fields of art and design.

The current group includes the scholar Liat Lavi.

Our mode of action is based on ‘pop-up’ stations, each dealing with book art from a distinct perspective. The stations are supported by ongoing activity in an international network of organizational collaborators such as artistic and academic institutions, as well as publishers and printing houses.

Station#1

“The Possibility of a Book” had taken over the project room of the Sommer Gallery, one of the most prominent art galleries in Tel Aviv. The space was transformed into a station for creating artist books, operated by eight young designers, exceptional students of the Holon Institute of Technology. Six chosen artists worked in the space with pre-assigned designers, and other artists were invited to use professional tools and advice. The entire work process was exposed to gallery visitors. Six books were fully designed and produced and were then exhibited in the gallery.

Station#2

Organized by: Leah Abir, Avigail Reiner, Liat Lavi

At Shenkar College

Examining the political and social contexts and implications of publishing, the conference delineated a brief history of the publishing impulse, which seemingly intensifies in times of social revolt, and constantly changes in light of technological advances. The different panels and speakers focused on the way in which contemporary culture produces and distributes information and ideas, and constitutes publishing subjects, institutions, platforms, and readers/addressees. The second day of the conference included workshops given by key guest speakers, including Max Schumann, Chris Meade, Morehshin Allahyari,  Sheizaf Refaeli, Michel Al-Rahab, Mushon Zer-Aviv, Shveta Sarda, Christopher Roth and Sam Chermayeff, Gelare Khoshgozaran
