Yuli Serfati: Steady States
Arad Contemporary Art Center
April 16, 2021 - July 24, 2021
A "Steady state" is a condition in which all the actors in a particular system remain constant despite continuous efforts of change. Stagnation and the relentless pursuit of change were the two main forces driving Yuli Serfaty’s exhibition. It centered on a digital environment based on visual and audio samples of local desert areas that the artist collected during her stay in the residency program at the Center for Contemporary Art in Arad.
The main work offers the viewer three tours: "Above," "Inward," and "Rift." All three were guided by the artist's voice weaving stories through the landscape. The narration described how water resources in the area were controlled by various forces, and the consequences of these power relations: gaping sinkholes, drying ancient aquifers, and dying seas. The desert sky was revealed as a fire zone, and the Zionist “rejuvenation of the wilderness” project – as a desert climate war.
